Maritime Assault Boot - With the need for shoes that provide the ability to feel the ground and fit easily into the dive fins, Navy SEALs wear long Chuck Taylors. The lack of curvature means that even in dark or underwater conditions, one can feel the ground under one's feet is sensitive, which is important when climbing wet stairs or walking in water, and one mistake can lead to disaster. Their slim profile also allows them to fit directly into most SEAL team diving suits.
With that in mind, longtime US military equipment supplier Altama has created a lightweight boot design in the OTB Marine Assault Mids. These shoes provide support to the ankle without restricting the joint from moving completely, with a grippy upper even when wet and quick drying. I walked in them, swam in the lake to test how dry they were and how much water my feet would hold. I find that swimming in them is almost as good as walking, as they don't seem to absorb much water, and they dry quickly once out of the lake.

When I first removed the cardboard box from the packaging, I was amazed at the weight of these shoes. These are more similar to shoe weights than shoe weights. At 385 grams, or 13.5 ounces, these shoes weigh almost nothing, which may translate into foot fatigue during use. This is a good start.
Incredibly sticky outsole forms the basis of this shoe, adhering well to wet surfaces as well as stone and asphalt. The unexpected part of these shoes is the height of the foot and toe. The heel, while definitely firm, is not too thick, unlike the shoes I have worn in the past.
Lifting the shoe from the foot, we have 1000 denier Cordura nylon panels that make up the body of this shoe, which provides excellent waterproofing, while the rest is support and cushioning. Good-sized floor mats and mesh make it comfortable every day, or on the road, with good ventilation. In the foot, the foot is also wrapped in strong synthetic rubber with drainage ports built into the front of the ball of the foot when climbing. These are rested in Cordura and have a thin mesh to allow water to escape whenever the foot is pulled.
The internal unit is sealed with a highly aggressive form of rubber that is waterproof, which will destroy most socks given time and effort. They also lack sky support, especially for the operator to feel the space under the feet and obstacles. I use thin socks when I wear socks every day to keep my feet happy during the day and rubber socks when I go outside without socks in wet weather or environments such as at the lake, boating or hiking. Where I need to cross a river or stream. One problem with waterproof socks is that sweat can pool on the bottom of the shoe, so they work best when they're wet.

The laces are strong but thin and flat, to reduce hot spots when using the fan, although I have not seen this in person. I have found that they will happily roll themselves up on most trips, so if you use fans with these, make sure the laces are flattened. The eyelets of these shoes are rust resistant and covered with a durable shine material to keep your shoes spotless, which means it's not something you give to anyone.
The top of the heel and tongue have enough padding to tighten the laces, keep these shoes snug, and provide enough support for climbing and hiking. The mesh inside the shoe, which goes to the upper leg, also dries quickly when soaked in water or sweat, although as a former hiker, I still recommend foot powder.
The style of these shoes is clearly inspired by the Converse All-Star Hi-Tops, with large rubber, low heel, and the overall appearance of the Cordura fabric used in their construction. These shoes work effectively in the field and are improved in many ways, but with a quick wash and brush, these shoes will still be suitable for the local club or on the street. I find that I like these shoes around town, and my Garmont T8 Bifida shoes when I'm working on the range or in the field, based on their performance and shape. As I mentioned earlier, it comes in a number of patterns, so I chose gray to keep it from looking tactical.
I wore these shoes daily for a few months and found that the flat insoles, while good for some things like using the feet in wet environments, hurt the bottom of my feet while on any length of daily commute. The lack of arch support caused my feet to drop faster than what is considered normal. Switch to the Arch Support insoles set it up manually, and there are no problems getting them in, and they don't need to be cut to fit.

Riding in them is more like riding in sneakers than shoes, where the pedals provide more feedback due to the grip of the shoe as well as the general thinness of the outsole. They also don't have unnecessary flares to the outside, which means no shoes catching on the edge of one pedal when pushing the other. I find them very convenient for this and other tasks.
The real test of their abilities came when they were on a climbing holiday at Clingman Dome in Smoky Mountain Park. These shoes dug my feet into the meeting and allowed me to Climb a large granite stone in the measure. After the mountain. I did not take the easy route with all the children, but climbed between two faces almost Set, and these soles grip me like rock climbing shoes. I have also used these shoes to play with my toddler at the park, both on the splash pad, the playground path, its stairs, climbing wall, and covered metal surfaces. These shoes are slippery when wet or dry.
I love these shoes, especially after a three-week long vacation, for their ability to handle everything from grocery shopping to boating and hiking. The styling is classic, and the performance is top notch for their price point. I would argue that these shoes are better than their price point.
The break-in period of these shoes is about three weeks long, and due to the material and construction, you cannot soak them in water to help other shoes. These shoes also run about a size smaller than your normal fit. I should have ordered a size 12, as others suggested because I normally wear an 11, and it seems to fit this way. Research also shows that it is recommended to go up the next full size if you wear a half, and go up 1.5 sizes in general if you wear a half size. My other complaint is that they only come with a single pair of insoles, which provide little arch support, and are very hard on the feet when walking or walking on the range for a long time.
Altama Maritime Assault Mid Relv Camo
Altama OTB Marine Assault Mids make a great choice for hikers, sailors and everyday use, and look how well they do. There is no reason to choose between style and function when these shoes are available at their price. I will continue to wear these shoes regularly, and hope to report back after some time to give an update on their wear and any issues that arise.
A: These shoes have a one-year manufacturer's warranty, and a 60-day comfort guarantee, in case they don't fit you.
